BSD and Submittal Exchange announce construction technology partnership

ATLANTA — Building Systems Design Inc. (BSD) and Submittal Exchange LLC have announced a strategic partnership for joint marketing of BSD SpecLink and Submittal Exchange, the primary products of the two companies.

BSD SpecLink is an automated specifications writing software product sold primarily to architects and consulting engineers. Submittal Exchange is a collaborative online system for exchanging, reviewing, and archiving construction submittals, RFIs, and other construction communications.

The products of the two companies are complementary, according to Matt Ostanik, AIA, LEED AP, president of Submittal Exchange, and Robert Dean, AIA, president of BSD.

Dean and Ostanik said that because the buyers of both products tend to be technologically savvy, and because the products work well together, it benefits users of both systems to be educated on additional efficiencies for their construction administration.

Specifications are produced by BSD SpecLink in a database that allows automatic generation of many reports, including submittals reports. These reports, in turn, can be utilized by Submittal Exchange in setting up projects for submittals management in their online system.

According to Ostanik, managing submittals by conventional means is a major problem during the construction process. “Submittal Exchange's Integrated Product Collaboration (IPC) software that automates the submittals process, decreases paperwork, speeds up the transactions, and maintains a log of all the submittals activities," he said.

Dean pointed out that specifications produced by BSD SpecLink can be delivered electronically to Submittal Exchange and set up for submittals management in a fraction of the time required by conventional methods.

"This partnership demonstrates that electronic means for managing construction communications is becoming more prevalent, particularly with the increasing popularity of Integrated Project Delivery," said Ostanik. "BSD SpecLink is the clear leader for electronic construction specifications and Submittal Exchange is on the leading edge of emerging IPC software. Positioning our two products side-by-side benefits the entire industry."

Under the cooperative marketing agreement signed by BSD and Submittal Exchange, each company will include information about the other company on its web site and will promote each other in periodic newsletters, email communications to customers, and various other media. In addition, BSD SpecLink will include information about Submittal Exchange in its specifications content and will enable its users to specify the services of Submittal Exchange.
