Beck showcases BIM project at IFMA conference

ATLANTA — The Beck Group showcased its focus on BIM during a tour of Georgia Tech’s Hinman Research Building, which is under renovation. The historic building will house Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture.

The tour took place as part of the pre-meeting agenda of the International Facility Management Association’s (IFMA) World Workplace 2010 Conference & Expo.

Beck serves as general contractor on the renovation of the historic 1932 building. The renovation, which is nearly complete, includes complicated millwork that reflects the character of the building but which likely would have been too expensive and time-consuming without Beck’s integrated team of architects and constructors utilizing their expertise combined with BIM technology, the company said. For the Hinman renovation, Beck is utilizing a digital design and fabrication process to deliver the intricate millwork on time and under budget.

“We are honored to be the general contractor on this project and to help rehabilitate, adapt and expand the capacity of the historically significant Hinman Building,” said Josh Oakley, BIM manager at Beck. “The tour was a great opportunity to showcase and share best practices with leaders in the facilities management and related industries.”

Beck partnered with architecture firms Lord Aeck & Sargent of Atlanta and Office da of Boston to perform the project’s design-build aspect.

“We have no learning curve figuring out how to work together or with partners,” said Fred Perpall, managing director of Beck’s Eastern Division. “We can focus on the client and the project right from the start. Our project delivery process reduces costs, preserves quality, and speeds up time to market. It is just a more effective and efficient delivery process.”

Before the tour, Beck’s Oakley led a discussion titled “BIM to Preserve Value” at the Wardlaw Building on Georgia Tech’s campus.
