AECOM publishes white paper on Information-led Design and Multidimensional Modeling
LOS ANGELES — AECOM Technology Corporation released a white paper titled, "Information-led Design and Multidimensional Modeling: Deploying Data as a Critical Asset in Enhanced Project Delivery.” The white paper details how Information-led Design and Multidimensional Modeling represent the next step in the evolution of the way architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms design and deliver their services.
“The advent and continuing development of Building Information Modeling (BIM) transformed our industry’s approach to designing buildings and other structural assets,” said John Kizior, director of delivery solutions at AECOM. “However, BIM is only a precursor to the ability to deploy data for better project outcomes and to certify the asset’s lifecycle performance. Information-led Design and Multidimensional Modeling promise these benefits and more.”
Information-led Design is the purposeful use of data to achieve better project delivery and drive improved project outcomes. Successfully implementing Information-led Design requires going beyond the traditional 2-D, 3-D, and 4-D modeling typically associated with BIM and toward Multidimensional Modeling, where multiple sources of data are integrated to visualize, design, plan, schedule and manage all phases of a project, as well as to certify an asset’s operational performance as early as the conceptual design stage.
“Even with the significant advantages that BIM offers, the industry still typically implements each project phase independent of the other phases, which leads to higher costs and project delays — especially if mistakes are made in the earlier phases,” said Jim Walsh, AECOM senior vice president and chief technology officer. “Information-led Design, enabled by Multidimensional Modeling enables a nonlinear approach to project design and delivery through the use of integrated data at the earliest stages of the project. As a result, we are able to improve project delivery and deliver a more predictable outcome for our clients.”
In addition to the white paper, Walsh and Kizior offer commentary about the benefits of Information-led Design and Multidimensional Modeling in a recently released video. The white paper and the video can be found at www.aecom.com/About/Innovation/Modeling.
