Research by New York-based AMI-Partners found that the use of smartphones and tablets by U.S. small and medium businesses is skyrocketing. AMI estimates that in the next 12 months, the number of small businesses owning smartphones will increase 40 percent from 3.5 million and those owning tablets will increase 85 percent from 700,000.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Transportation Research Board is holding a free, online-only, day-long workshop to educate the transportation community on the uses of social media on Wednesday, Sept. 21. "Keeping up with Communication Technology: An Online Workshop on the Practical Use of Social Media" will include two plenary sessions and eight breakout sessions. Each session will feature a speaker or host from the transportation industry. Those registered may participate in as many or as few sessions as desired.
RESTON, VA. — You can receive a text or email from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) when waters are rising in rivers and streams near you. The service, called WaterAlert, allows users to receive notifications about water levels at any of more than 7,000 USGS real-time streamgages around the country. There is no cost to users for this notification service.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — As Hurricane Irene barreled up the Eastern seaboard, two important social media tools came in handy as state departments of transportation (DOTs) tried to spread the word — Facebook and Twitter. Many of the affected DOTs in Irene's path posted important messages about power outages, tree debris, safety, and dark traffic signals via these media. And in the aftermath, many are now asking their Facebook friends and Twitter followers to post photos of the damage to assist in their clean-up efforts.
LOS ANGELES — In an effort to enhance collaboration by technical staff across geographies and business lines, AECOM has launched new Global Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Standards. Effective immediately, the standards should be leveraged as the basis for new CAD documentation, unless previously approved client standards are in place.
FORT STEWART, GA. — STV and Mortenson Construction recently completed work on a design-build project for the new Fort Stewart Brigade and Battalion Headquarters at Fort Stewart, Ga., to support the 4th Infantry Combat Brigade Team. This marks the first time that a single facility was designed and constructed to house a brigade command structure and six battalion commands. The design-build team used Bentley building information modeling (BIM) software to create a 3D graphic model. This approach offered numerous advantages in cost savings and scheduling. BIM allowed contractors and designers to compile information quickly and share it easily among all parties.
LOS ANGELES — AECOM Technology Corporation announced that its project, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Sustainability Base (Building N232) in Moffett Field, Calif., won two awards for sustainability and innovation. The project won the 2010 U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Award for Green Innovation and the 2010 San Jose Silicon Valley Award for Best Green Public Structure. The project has also been submitted for the 2011 U.S. Presidential GreenGov Award and was featured in the White House press release “GreenGov Success Stories.”
