BLACKSBURG, Va. – Mani Golparvar-Fard, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech, has developed an augmented reality modeling system that automatically analyzes physical progress on large-scale construction projects. The system allows a contractor to determine whether a project is on, ahead, or behind schedule, leading to cost savings and reduction in project delivery time.
Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc., a provider of CAD and Building Information Modeling software solutions, has released the 2013 version of its Vectorworks line of design software, including: Vectorworks Designer, Architect, Landmark, Spotlight, Fundamentals and Renderworks. The 2013 versions include many interoperability enhancements including Direct support for gbXML.
Bentley Systems today announced that it has acquired Ontario, Canada-based Ivara, a provider of asset performance management (APM) software solutions for organizations in asset-intensive industries, including mining and metals, power generation and utilities, oil and gas, and petrochemical. The Ivara EXP solution – a core system mission critical to operations and maintenance, combined with a proven implementation methodology and the Aladon Network’s reliability practitioners – helps owner-operators to obtain the best performance, reliability, and safety from their assets. APM software supplements and leverages value in transaction-oriented enterprise asset management systems such as IBM Maximo and SAP EAM by helping to build and implement asset-specific reliability strategies. Ivara is an IBM Member-Level Partner with Certified Ready for Tivoli integration as well as an SAP Software Solution Partner with SAP Certified - Powered by NetWeaver integration.
As Vela Systems was acquired by Autodesk in June, the field BIM managment solution is now joining the Autodesk product family with a new name, Autodesk BIM 360 Field. Field is short for “Field Management.” A Vela press release said its personnel are "still committed to the revolution in how mobility and cloud computing are changing the way construction work is done and managed."
Leica Geosystems has recently upgraded and expanded the coverage of its Leica SmartNet RTK Network in California, making real-time GNSS correction available to 82% of the state’s population. The largest GPS/GLONASS reference station network in the world, Leica SmartNet gives GNSS users access to differential correction for any measurement application without the use of a base station.
Synergis Software, developers of the Adept engineering document management and product data management solution, recently released Adept 2013. “Adept 2013 contains numerous enhancements to our CAD integrations, plus support for the 2013 suite of Autodesk products,” says Todd Geiser, Adept product manager. “We’ve also added significant performance improvements and over 140 other customer-requested new features and fixes.”
Gehry Technologies (GT), a building industry applied technology software solutions developer, has completed the acquisition of Bimshare, a privately-held company based in the Netherlands. On the heels of launching its 3D collaboration platform, GTeam, GT is expanding its cloud-based service offerings with this acquisition. Bimshare offers a popular building information modeling (BIM) data sharing solution that provides the easiest way to upload and share 3D models online through browsers on desktop or mobile devices. Through its elegant and easy interface Bimshare enables architects, building owners, contractors, fabricators, and engineers to quickly and securely share BIM data on demand. A SaaS-based solution, Bimshare is a natural addition to GT’s BIM collaboration strategy focused on the AEC industry. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Earlier this week, Autodesk announced that Project Spark, a "simplified BIM" technology preview featured on Autodesk Labs, for the past year would be released later this month as Revit LT, a stripped down version of the company's 3D building design platform, Autodesk Revit. Priced at $1,200 for the standalone product (standard Revit has a recommended price of $5,775), Revit LT is designed for small to medium-sized archtectural firms and construction companies that are using 2D workflows and want to transition to a 3D workflow. Therein, lies its central challenge: bringing along firms that are still using 2D without changing their workflow to be collaborative.
