DENVER — Prefabrication and Modular construction are showing tremendous promise for improving construction productivity, cost, and efficiency. According to a recent McGraw-Hill study, their use is reducing construction schedules by four weeks or more, cutting project budgets by 6 percent or more, and reducing jobsite waste by 5 percent or more. As building information modeling’s (BIM) use becomes more widespread and sophisticated, it is expected that prefab and modular construction will increase dramatically in the coming years.
BUDAPEST – GRAPHISOFT announced ArchiCAD 17, the latest version of its award-winning building information modeling (BIM) software. The new release delivers capabilities that greatly simplify the modeling and documentation of buildings even when the model contains a high level of detail. ArchiCAD’s end-to-end BIM workflow allows the model to stay live until the very end of the project.
FRAMINGHAM, MASS. ― Rand Worldwide announced its IMAGINiT Technologies division is unveiling the latest enhancements in the 2014 portfolio of Autodesk design and engineering software, as well as highlighting IMAGINiT’s own Scan to BIM 2014 software. The “Know It. All. Events” are scheduled for May 8, 2013 with additional on-demand content available on IMAGINiT’s ProductivityNOW Portal.
RESTON, VA. — Android and iPhone users can now use their mobile devices as digital topo maps, leveraging U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maps together with the power of GPS to zoom in on their precise location while hiking, biking, running, or any other activity that benefits from precision navigation. The type of data that are available includes USGS imagery and topographic maps from The National Map, as well as road and contour layers.
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS — Red Seat Software, a Structural Engineering Software Solutions Provider for S-FRAME Software, Inc. and Tilt-Up Design Systems, LLC., announced the availability of additional "how to" videos to augment their S-CONCRETE Design product for reinforced concrete beam design. In less than 5 minutes, a viewer can readily see how quickly and how easily an engineer or designer can design, analyze, and code-check a reinforced concrete column or wall section.
TORRANCE, CALIF. — Altus Positioning Systems introduced APS-T GNSS survey receiver, which provides global real-time 10-cm positioning using the TERRASTAR-D Precise Point Positioning (PPP) augmentation service. The new APS-T contains a Septentrio GNSS receiver with an embedded L-band modem for receiving TERRASTAR-D data for computing positions with the PPP technique. It is designed to provide a low-cost, real-time decimeter-level GNSS surveying solution without the need for a local reference station with UHF radios or cellular coverage from Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) networks.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Contractors' use of smartphones while on the job jumped 35 percent from last year, according to new research from EMA Contractors, a specialty group at Eric Mower + Associates. While the use of tablets (i.e., iPad) rose nearly 54 percent over last year (overall, 22 percent of contractors are using tablets), most contractors (68 percent) said they use smartphones as part of their workday.
EXTON, PA. — Bentley Systems, Incorporated contributed $100,000 to Water For People in support of the organization’s work improving water systems in emerging economies around the world. Bentley has also donated a selection of eight software products from its portfolio, including MicroStation, WaterGEMS, SewerGEMS, FlowMaster, and Bentley Map. The software will be used by Water For People team members to design, engineer, and construct water systems, as well as to map the functionality of water points in every district.
BURNABY, B.C. — Employers continue to be concerned about the risk and liability posed by employee use of mobile devices while driving on the job. Seven in 10 companies have adopted written policies designed to curb employee distracted driving, but only 32 percent are confident that current enforcement methods are effective at achieving compliance.
MIAMI, FLA. — Bentley Systems, Incorporated’s ProjectWise V8i and Bentley Navigator V8i have each won a commercial 2013Constructech Top Product award in the “Trusted Products” category. This is the third time in as many years that Bentley Navigator has won the award and the second consecutive year ProjectWise has won. The award honors technology solutions that have demonstrated the greatest innovations geared toward the construction market.
