10:45-11:30am Digital Jeopardy: What Every Design Professional Needs to Know to Avoid a Lawsuit
Theodore D. Levin, P.E., Esq. and D. Creighton Sebra, Esq., Morris Polich & Purdy LLP
As technology advances at a rapid pace, legal issues relating to copyright violations, trademark issues, the use of Facebook and other on-line social media, as well the use of internet-related content become increasingly prevalent. Failure to understand the legal ramifications related to technology can lead to disputes and litigation. This discussion will include legal issues and potential liability related to the use of technology in the design and construction phases of the building process. It will also incorporate a discussion of IPD, BIM, Green Building Design, and other related technological processes and the potential pitfalls and legal consequences.
11:30-12:15pm Managing Technological Change Gerri King, Ph.D., President, Human Dynamics Associates, Inc.
We know that positive change can be just as stressful as negative change because with every gain there is a tradeoff. Instituting changes in technology often result in resistance and anxiety for employees who do not have the expertise of IT professionals. This session addresses the challenges while offering techniques for facilitating transitions. Participants will gain a better understanding of the reactions they can expect and specific skills for handling the issues with which they're presented. Because human dynamics are complicated, how such initiatives are managed spill over into what employees think they can expect from other major changes.
12:15-1:15pm Lunch
1:15-2:15pm Models as Wikis: Source Control, Model Servers, and Cloud Systems for Open 3D Concurrent Design
Dennis Shelden (CTO) and Andrew Witt (Director of Research), Gehry Technologies
The creation of integrated 3D building models is surprisingly related to source control systems used to develop complex computer code collaboratively: multi-participant, multi-objective, intricately interdependent. Over the last four years, Gehry Technologies (GT) has been extensively using source control systems for the delivery of 3D models of increasingly integrated projects. The projects range in scale from a few designers to a few hundred designers, across broad ranges of disciplines and geographies. This presentation will showcase three projects by leading design firms in which GT used distributed source control to create new efficiencies and methods of collaboration, to deliver unprecedented projects.
CONCURRENT FOCUS SESSIONS
2:15-3:15pm Collaborative BIM in the Cloud Tony Ryan, CEO, Asite LLC and More McCormack, Assoc. AIA, National Reprographics, Inc.
As many are transitioning from traditional CAD standards to a BIM methodology and IPD standards, the presenters will describe the role that collaboration beyond the firewall can play in this environment. This type of collaboration could well be the next step in reducing the myriad of inefficiencies that exist in the construction industry. The presentation will also include a discussion of specific roadblocks as well as enablers to team collaboration in the 21st century and the role cloud computing platforms that have native support for both open and proprietary BIM formats can play in the future.

This session will revolve around a case study of the methods Coffman Engineers, Inc. utilized to create their virtual environment along with some of the inexpensive tools they used to protect their environment. Wes Peper will go over best practices and show how they were able to create a complete disaster recovery solution with two R710 Dell servers and one Dell MD3000i SAN Array in each office by maximizing their resources. He will also review over their disaster recovery system which includes site-to-site replication and their processes for moving from tape backup to disk in an organization that keeps project drawings forever. At Coffman Engineers, Inc. they have not had any downtime in years. They did this by being proactive instead of being reactive. With an almost 100% virtualized infrastructure, solid DR solution, WAN Optimization, and good monitoring system they believe you can be on the leading edge without being on the bleeding edge of technology.
Walking the Talk - Marketing as Aspiration; IT as Authenticity
Mike Anders, President , and Brian Hase, CTO, Agile Frameworks
For good reason, most Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) firms promote Marketing as BRAND projection – ensuring Awards are made prominent and their firms are perceived to be Great Places to Work. All admirable achievements in and of themselves! However, brand and firm perception in the mind of your firms’ clients is the single most important factor to your future. More and more often, every firm/client touch-point is shaded, mediated, managed, and impacted by how well you utilize information technologies. Whether it’s interoperability between firms, the quality and timeliness of design, technical, or project status data, or the ease with which you can communicate with business partners and stakeholders – you deliver the promise your firm makes using information technologies. In this presentation we will suggest a new thought process for IT leaders in the AEC industry about promoting, supporting, and strengthening your firm’s brand, and will suggest the things IT leaders – and ONLY IT leaders - can do to change their clients’ perceptions for the better.
